Lately I feel like Esther. She was the woman who risked her life to save her people from the evil plans of Haman. I’m not sure how extreme I would go in this situation, but I do feel heartache with the current conflicts in Mexico. Satan is really having a feast there-murders and gun fights daily, kidnappings, and a battle for power is what is going on…in a nutshell. I’m not going to pretend I know a whole lot. I think I purposefully have kept myself from fully investigating and researching the real deal because it makes me so angry and sad at the same time.
Some people might wonder how a loving God would allow these types of things to happen to innocent people, but I don’t think He is at all responsible. We are all born sinners, first of all, and we also have free will. Can he come to the rescue, yes, I believe He can. I believe that He could clean up the streets of Mexico, do away with corruption, send the cartels and narcs where they belong in a second- He is that big. But what is He really teaching us through all this? For me, this is a calling to go to my people and offer them hope. If life in this earth has been miserable for them, they should know about the life He promises us when all evil is destroyed.
My heart for Mexico is burning, but I find myself helpless a lot. What difference could I make? I’ll never really be able to relate to their pain and anger, even though those feelings are within me, in a different way, I suppose.
Recently, people here in south Texas have been deported or put in jail because of their legal status. I feel their pain, and this seems less and less “the land of the free”. People will argue and bring key points as to why this is the right thing to do, and whatever, the fact of the matter is that ultimately, these are humans and they have families. I fail to understand the arrogance and selfishness of some people. I wish I could take it all in and make it go away, but I am just one. And, well I don’t have that kind of power, obviously.
So, how can I be more like Esther?
The lessons that we can learn from Esther are faithfulness, trust in God, and a willingness to follow His will whether we are afraid or not. Esther’s act on behalf of the Jews is a picture of sacrifice. The Hebrew culture, as well as other Middle Eastern cultures, saw things in pictures. Western Civilization looks at the world with words. Her story is a partial illustration of what the Savior, Jesus Christ, would do 500 years later. Esther – Hadassah – was willing to sacrifice herself to save her people.
